  • DAVID HOCKNEY
  • Early Digital Works, Created 2009 - 2013

    Early Digital Works

    Created 2009 - 2013
David Hockney has always been an innovator, so it's no surprise that recent stages in his career have incorporated digital technologies. Since his earliest digital drawings released in the early 2000s, he has continued to experiment with computers, iPhones and iPads in the production of his artworks.

In 2009, Hockney began using his iPhone to document various scenes, particularly the sunrise from his home in Bridlington, "there was great advantage in this medium because it's backlit and I could draw in the dark. I didn't ever have to get out of bed. Everything I needed was on the iPhone" says Hockney. Then in 2010, he bought an iPad while in California and began documenting various concepts with a higher level of detail using the stylus. Hockney’s early digital experiments carry his signature visual language into unfamiliar territory. At a time when digital art was still in its infancy, Hockney approached it with the same openness and formal rigor that defines his entire practice.

  • "The computer is a very good tool, but it needs imagination to use it well"

    - David Hockney

The range of subject matter and styles seen in these early releases demonstrate the breadth of Hockney's experimentation. From still lifes to portraits, and landscapes to abstracts, the digital drawings capture Hockney's vivid use of colour as playful but considered works of art. Some of the works released by the studio weren't produced as a print release and were only released publically online or in books, such as in his 'My Window' release, however many of them were released in print releases of around 25 per artwork. These works present traditional techniques brought into a contemporary medium, showcasing Hockney's artistic versatility.
