"They were about the surface of the water, the very thin film, the shimmering, two-dimensionality."
- David Hockney on his pool works
Swimming pools became one of David Hockney's most enduring artistic motifs after he moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s. Drawn to the city's modern architecture, bright sunlight and outdoor lifestyle, Hockney became fascinated by the visual challenge of depicting water—an element that is constantly changing yet inherently transparent. Throughout his career, he returned repeatedly to the subject, using painting, printmaking and experimental paper pulp works to explore reflections, perspective, movement and light.
