The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, 2 June 2011 marks the final drawing in David Hockney’s Arrival of Spring in Woldgate series, capturing the landscape at the point where spring gives way to early summer. The composition returns to a familiar structure seen throughout the series, with a pale sandy path running through the centre of a now fully developed woodland. Dense green foliage fills both sides of the scene, with trees in full leaf creating a rich canopy. In the foreground, a small architectural remnant appears to the left, while clusters of white flowers emerge on the right, signalling the transition into a new season.

This work was included in a major group sale of Arrival of Spring in Woldgate drawings at Sotheby’s in October 2025, where it exceeded its high estimate and achieved one of the strongest results among the regular-size editions. Rather than cooling the market, the sale reinforced demand for the series and contributed to renewed collector confidence. A full breakdown of the auction and its wider impact can be found in our Sotheby’s auction analysis.
