BACK TO: ARRIVAL OF SPRING IN WOLDGATE

The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 19 April 2011 is an iPad drawing by David Hockney, created as part of his Arrival of Spring in Woldgate series. This work presents a wooded interior, where slender tree trunks in soft pink and yellow tones rise through early spring foliage. Fresh greens and yellow blossoms appear throughout the scene, while a cut tree stump in the foreground introduces a sense of depth, drawing the viewer along a narrow path that recedes into the landscape beyond.

Market interest in the Arrival of Spring in Woldgate series intensified following a major group sale at Sotheby's in London in October 2025, when a significant number of iPad works were offered together. Rather than weakening demand, the sale marked a turning point for the whole series, with strong results across multiple dates reinforcing collector confidence and reshaping expectations around value. Further insight into this shift can be found in our dedicated analysis of the auction.

  • "Every time I go out, I see something to draw"

    - David Hockney

David Hockney’s first fully realised iPad series was The Yosemite Suite, produced between 2010 and 2011, followed by the Arrival of Spring series. In later years, the iPad became central to his working practice, offering both portability and immediacy and allowing him to draw directly from observation without the constraints of traditional materials. As a result of the medium’s digital nature, collectors often have questions around edition structures, series variations, and the factors that influence value. For a deeper understanding of these aspects, read our Collector’s Guide to Hockney’s iPad and Digital Works.
