BACK TO: ARRIVAL OF SPRING IN WOLDGATE

The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 13 January 2011, is a composition that features regularly throughout the series. In this work, the image is misty in character with redish-brown trees flanking eitherside of the lane. The red tones are offset by the light blue hue coming from between the spindly branches above the lane and the green grass.

One of the reasons collectors are drawn to The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate series is the considered scale of the works. The regular-format iPad prints are large enough to showcase David Hockney’s colour and detail, yet practical for display in private homes and offices. This balance between impact and livability has helped broaden the series’ appeal, positioning it as both accessible and credible within the contemporary print market. For further insight into why these factors have supported sustained demand, read our Arrival of Spring in Woldgate 2025 market analysis.

    - David Hockney

David Hockney’s use of colour is a constant across his career, giving his work an immediately recognisable visual language. From early paintings to later digital works, colour is used to shape space and mood rather than to replicate reality, allowing him to intensify light, rhythm and form. This sustained approach links his work across decades and mediums, reinforcing colour as a central element of his practice.
