Hockney’s Normandy landscapes often balance the intensely observed with the joyfully artificial. In August 2021, Landscape with Shadows, he pushes that tension further. Built from twelve iPad paintings arranged into a single panoramic view, the composition is fractured yet cohesive, each panel shifting colour, pattern and perspective in a way that refuses a single fixed viewpoint.

Bright fields, geometric hillsides and stylised plants flatten natural space into pure design. The shadows cast across the foreground add the only real sense of time, reminding us that this landscape is not still. Hockney turns the screen into a place for invention rather than illusion, embracing the digital medium’s saturated colour and graphic precision. The result is a landscape that feels both intimate and constructed, a record of looking that is shaped by technology as much as by nature.
  • "Drawing is rather like playing chess: your mind races ahead of the moves that you eventually make."

    - David Hockney

David Hockney’s iPad works reflect his ongoing drive to rethink how images are made and seen. Using the tablet as a direct drawing surface, he captures colour, light and form with an immediacy that traditional materials cannot match. These digital compositions are later realised as limited edition prints, giving them a physical presence while retaining the clarity and intensity of the screen. Across landscapes, interiors and still life, Hockney treats the digital medium as a tool for observation rather than novelty, expanding his long exploration of how we perceive the world.
