In Exotic Flowers, Hockney turns his attention to a more dramatic botanical arrangement, defined by structural leaves and sharply angled blooms. The composition is intentionally vertical, with the vase positioned at the centre of the frame and the flowers extending upward and outward, creating a sense of poised movement. The deep brown background isolates the vivid greens and yellows, allowing the shapes to read with clarity. The red checked tablecloth introduces a familiar domestic element, anchoring the striking plant forms in an everyday setting.

    - David Hockney

Hockney’s engagement with nature has been one of the most consistent threads in his career. From the hedgerows and winding lanes of East Yorkshire to the bright, sculptural flora of California, he returns to the landscape not as a passive backdrop but as a dynamic subject in its own right. Nature challenges him to look harder and to embrace change, whether through shifting seasons, altered light or the fleeting life of a flower on a table. Across six decades of experimentation in painting, photography and now digital drawing, Hockney treats the natural world as an endless source of visual intelligence, a place where new ways of seeing are always waiting to be discovered.
