Yayoi Kusama’s Girls AAA (2011) is a print on paper measuring 63.5 × 75 cm (sheet), produced in an exceptionally small edition of just 5. The work presents a bold, figurative composition, reflecting Kusama’s interest in blending surreal figuration with her wider visual language of repetition and pattern. Its rarity and scale make it a particularly striking example of her late printmaking practice.

In Girls AAA, the human figure becomes both subject and symbol. The stylised forms are enriched with graphic detail and rhythmic design, echoing Kusama’s lifelong exploration of identity, psychology, and infinity. By placing figures within her patterned world, the work transforms portraiture into a meditation on the self and its dissolution within larger cycles of existence.

  • “I paint self-portraits constantly in order to survive.”

     — Yayoi Kusama

As with many of her editioned works from the 2010s, Girls AAA demonstrates Kusama’s ability to fuse intimate subject matter with universal themes. The print captures both the individuality of the figures and their place within her obsessive, interconnected visual universe, underscoring her status as one of the most influential contemporary artists.
