    BACK TO: WATER LILIES SERIES

Water Lilies with Bridge (1992) by Roy Lichtenstein depicts a serene pond punctuated by floating lily pads and anchored by a gently arching bridge. Unlike other works in the series, the blue bridge provides a clear horizontal and structural element that divides the composition, creating a sense of movement across the reflective water. Lichtenstein abstracts the scene using clean black outlines, flat strips of green, and simplified shapes that transform the natural setting into a graphic, Pop Art interpretation.

The lily pads appear as isolated, rounded forms, carefully spaced to create rhythm and balance within the composition. Standing out against the calm water, the bridge is rendered in bold linear segments to provide a visual focal point that guides the viewer’s eye across the scene. Reflections of the bridge and lilies are implied through overlapping shapes and subtle variations in the enamel surface, producing a layered effect without traditional shading.
  • "It’s an industrial way of making Impressionism by a machine-like technique."
