Roy Lichtenstein’s Two Nudes, State I, 1994, is a  relief print from the celebrated Nudes series, depicting two female figures within a stylised interior. One reclines on a bed with her head resting on pillows, blonde hair held back by a dark blue headband, her form defined by strong blue contour lines. Beside her, a seated figure leans in a comforting gesture, similarly outlined in blue but distinguished by vivid red Ben-Day dots across her body. In the background, a vase, chest of drawers and plant reinforce the domestic setting, anchoring the composition within Lichtenstein’s layered interior vocabulary.

Printed on BFK Rives mould-made paper and issued in a scarce edition of 10, alongside artist’s proofs and workshop impressions, State I retains the large scale characteristic of Lichtenstein’s late prints, measuring 122.2 x 104.5 cm overall. Published and printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York, under the supervision of Kenneth Tyler and his workshop team.

Within Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes series, the State I impressions represent the most limited versions of the compositions. Issued in significantly smaller edition sizes, these state proofs often preserve subtle variations in colour intensity, dot density and line definition before the final edition was standardised. For collectors, Roy Lichtenstein Nudes State I prints hold particular appeal due to their rarity and position within the artist’s late printmaking process.
