Roy Lichtenstein’s Thinking Nude, State I, 1994, is a relief print from the Nudes series. The composition depicts a reclining female figure with her head resting in her hands and eyes closed, outlined in deep blue contour lines. Red Ben-Day dots cover much of her face, while red striping defines the lower body, creating a striking contrast between graphic pattern and form. In the background, a red dresser and fruit bowl anchor the interior setting, reinforcing Lichtenstein’s interplay between domestic space and stylised figuration.

Printed on BFK Rives mold-made paper Thinking Nude, State I was issued in a scarce edition of 10, alongside artist’s proofs and workshop impressions. Measuring 107 x 156.8 cm overall, the work retains the ambitious scale characteristic of Lichtenstein’s late print practice. Published and printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York, under the supervision of Kenneth Tyler and his workshop team, this state variation holds particular appeal for collectors seeking rare impressions from the Roy Lichtenstein Nudes series.
  • "I don't have big anxieties. I wish I did. I'd be much more interesting."

    - Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein used Ben-Day dots not simply as a graphic device but as a structural tool to control light, depth and surface tension within his compositions. In the State I impressions from the Nudes series, where edition sizes are significantly smaller, the dot patterns often appear more pronounced and tonally concentrated, emphasising contour and spatial layering.
