Roy Lichtenstein’s Sunrise, 1965 presents a stylised and radiant landscape defined by bold colour and graphic clarity. A brilliant yellow sun rises above rolling blue and red hills, its rays extending sharply across the composition. The sky is rendered in blue Ben-Day dots, punctuated by white clouds at the top of the image, creating a vivid contrast between mechanical pattern and natural subject matter. As with many of Lichtenstein’s mid-1960s works, the image transforms a conventional landscape into a flattened, Pop-inflected print.

The print was produced as an offset lithograph on lightweight white wove paper, published by the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, and printed by Graphic Industries, Inc. Issued in blue, red and yellow, the work measures approximately 62 cm in width, with an edition size that remains unknown. Its crisp registration and saturated palette situate Sunrise firmly within Lichtenstein’s early Pop period, reflecting his exploration of landscape through the visual language of mass reproduction.

  • "I think art was the one thing my high school didn't give. And I think that was probably one reason why I was interested in it."
