Roy Lichtenstein’s Interior series is distinctive in that the compositions were first realised as prints, with paintings of the same subjects developed afterwards. Preliminary discussions began in fall 1989, and in early 1990 Roy Lichtenstein began production at Gemini G.E.L.. He developed eight small collages in his New York studio as the basis for the project. With the exception of La Sortie, the compositions were derived from Yellow Pages advertisements, which Lichtenstein enlarged, traced, reversed, and extensively reworked before transferring them onto museum board and building up collage elements.

Technically ambitious, the Interiors combine woodcut, screenprint, and sandblasted Benday dots. Images were projected in reverse onto woodblocks to create key blocks, with colour areas prepared from Mylar tracings. Certain elements, such as puzzle-like cutout forms, were inked separately and fitted into the block. Lichtenstein reviewed black-line and colour proofs, sometimes adding collage to explore state variations. Notably, this series introduced a new Gemini blind stamp featuring the copyright symbol, publication year, the artist’s initials, and the Gemini logo - an important detail for collectors verifying authenticity and edition information.
