Created in 1983 and released in 2024, Odours of Punt is a screenprint by Jean-Michel Basquiat, measuring 84 × 42 inches. The composition is densely layered with energetic marks and handwritten elements, characteristic of Basquiat’s visual language. Vivid areas of deep blue, yellow and white cut across a ground of text, symbols and diagrammatic forms, creating a restless surface that blends abstraction with figuration. Odours of Punt was issued posthumously in a limited edition of 60, each work stamped and dated by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artist’s sisters and administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

In Odours of Punt, repeated rocket-like forms and fragmented text introduce a sense of motion and urgency across the composition. These elements reflect Jean-Michel Basquiat’s ability to combine visual energy with layered cultural reference, creating imagery that feels dynamic and open to interpretation rather than fixed in meaning.
