Yosemite No. 4 is an iPad drawing by David Hockney from the artist’s Yosemite Suite. The composition depicts a sunlit Yosemite forest, where tall red-barked trees rise from a vivid orange forest floor beneath layered green foliage and filtered light. Hockney uses bold colour contrasts and expressive digital brushwork to create rhythm and movement throughout the woodland scene, while the interplay of light and shadow gives the composition depth and atmosphere. The work reflects Hockney’s continued fascination with landscape, perspective, and the visual possibilities of digital drawing.

Created entirely on iPad, the Yosemite Suite marked an important development in Hockney’s digital practice, combining direct observation with contemporary technology. Produced during the artist’s engagement with Yosemite National Park, the series demonstrates how digital media could capture changing light, texture, and spatial complexity with immediacy and precision. The Yosemite works are now regarded among the most significant digital landscapes within Hockney’s wider body of prints and editions.
