Views of Hotel Well III, 1984-85, is the final variation of the Hotel Well compositions from David Hockney’s Moving Focus series. The work again centres around the hotel well, though here the composition becomes more refined and painterly in style. The brick arch above the well is rendered with greater clarity and structure, acting as the central focal point of the image. Surrounding the well, the green lawn is divided into segmented sections, separated by white linear pathways that radiate outward in a pattern reminiscent of sunlight or shifting perspective lines. Hockney balances these geometric forms with expressive mark-making and bold colour contrasts, creating a composition that feels immersive and carefully constructed.
The red patio flooring dominates the foreground, flattened yet textured through Hockney’s layered drawing techniques, while chairs and tables positioned around the edge of the scene reinforce the sense of an inhabited architectural space. Yellow pillars frame the composition and support a striped red and blue roof that curves overhead, heightening the distorted fish-eye perspective seen throughout the Moving Focus series. Combining elements of landscape, interior space and abstraction, Views of Hotel Well III reflects Hockney’s continued exploration of perception and spatial construction during the mid-1980s. Signed and dated, the lithograph was released in an edition of 80, alongside 18 artist’s proofs.
