Pembroke Studio Interior, 1984, is a signed and dated lithograph by David Hockney, created as part of his Moving Focus series. Marking a period of technical and conceptual experimentation, the series explores new ways of representing space, perspective, and movement through lithography. Drawing on early twentieth-century modernism, particularly the innovations of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, Hockney moves beyond traditional single-point perspective to construct compositions built from shifting viewpoints and spatial ambiguity.

In Pembroke Studio Interior, Hockney transforms the familiar setting of an artist’s studio into a complex and visually unstable environment. The scene is filled with chairs, lamps, an easel, hanging lightbulbs, and a boldly patterned floor, all viewed through a wide, distorted perspective that creates an almost panoramic, fish-eye effect. Objects appear deliberately inconsistent in scale, with furniture and architectural elements refusing to align logically within the space. Bold red diagonal stripes define the floor, while angular lines suggest competing planes of ceiling and wall, disrupting any clear sense of orientation.
