An Image of Celia (Study), 1986, is a lithograph by David Hockney from his Moving Focus series, presenting a fragmented and exploratory depiction of Celia Birtwell, one of the artist’s most enduring muses. Rather than a single unified portrait, the composition is divided into multiple studies, each capturing a different interpretation of her features. At the centre, Celia’s face is rendered in a highly stylised, almost surreal manner, with vivid blue eyes, green eyeshadow, dark lashes, and bold red lips, closely relating to the more resolved composition seen in An Image of Celia. Surrounding this are looser, more experimental sketches, including a simplified eye and lips set within a pink, crayon-like ground above, and a fluid blue line drawing below, suggesting an evolving figure.

An Image of Celia (Study) was produced in collaboration with Tyler Graphics Ltd., one of the most advanced print studios of the period. Working closely with master printer Kenneth Tyler, David Hockney was able to push the possibilities of colour lithography, achieving a balance between precise, layered colour and more spontaneous, sketch-like marks. Printed on HMP handmade paper and issued in an edition of 60 with additional artist’s proofs, the work reflects the high production standards and experimental approach that defined the collaboration during the Moving Focus series.
