    Yosemite Series Market

How Much are Yosemite iPads worth in 2024?

By quantity of works sold and total revenue, the Yosemite series have been historically one of our biggest private market sellers. Geist has often generated more revenue alone privately in a year than the total auction market combined. The series ranged significantly in composition quality, with one third being 'Ok', another third 'Good' and then the remainder 'Amazing'. Over recent years, the prices collectors have been willing to pay have varied significantly depending upon the edition. In the 2024 market, prices typically range between £60,000 - £110,000 for the regular sized Yosemite series. Over the years the private market has often performed better in terms of revenue and prices achieved than the auction market. The record auction result for the Yosemite series is currently held by Phillips London, who sold Yosemite No. 1 for £126,000.

  • "Over the years, we have sold most of the series. It is more complicated to value Yosemite's than Arrival of Spring's as there is more diversity in the aesthetics of the works."

The Yosemite series have had a broad collector base firstly due to the size of the regular editions - they can fit in almost any house or home. The works were quickly exhibited in a number of important museums and along with the Arrival of Spring series, acted as an early attracted to Hockney's new medium using the iPad. Out of all of the digitial series, Geist has experienced the strongest levels of demand for both the Yosemite and Arrival of Spring series. There also appears to be a price correlation between the two series. Both focused of colorful scenes of nature, as the prices of Arrival of Springs have risen in excess of £150,000, clients who have been priced out of this market have then began hunting for a Yosemite instead. Conversely, at the end of 2023 when Arrival of Spring prices cooled temporarily, we also saw a drop off in demand for Yosemite. In recent years, finding new Yosemite supply has proven to be a challenge with it always a struggle convincing owners to part with the works.
  • Total Auction Sales

    Total Auction Sales

In recent years, the Yosemite series has typically generated between $500,000 - $600,000 each year. We however predict that the total annual market size is likely to be 200-300% the auction market, including private sales. The series has proven a success from it's initial primary market release price of roughly £15,000 for the regular sized editions with the auction record now set at £126,000. Some recent years have been defined by single sale successes of the large scale works. By example in March 2023, Yosemite II sold for $378,000 at Christies New York which accounted for most of the years auction revenue.

  • Market Supply

    Market Supply

We predict that in recent years, in both the private market and auction market, roughly 15 Yosemite's are coming to market and selling. This steady supply is likely to dry up in coming years as the quantity of works which were bought primary, at much lower prices than the current market, shrinks to a few remaining works. A number of the series have come onto the market in recent years where it has been hard to find buyers at any price in excess of £50,000. However. conversly for the more popular works from the series we have had buyers offering on works which owners have been unprepared to sell for any price.
