Sale Ends Today is a monumental example of Banksy’s wit and social critique, combining the gravity of religious iconography with the absurdity of modern consumer culture. Across a stark white background, four veiled women are shown in mourning, kneeling and gesturing in despair. Their posture and draped robes recall classical depictions of biblical lamentation scenes. But instead of weeping over a martyr, they are grieving the impending end of a retail promotion.

This work belongs to Banksy’s tradition of repurposing historical visual language to deliver biting social commentary.  Sale Ends Today speaks to the hysteria of shopping culture and the empty promises of materialism, echoing the urgency of street art within the rarified context of the gallery.
