Peasant Woman with Riffle, 2009 depicts a young girl carrying a metal bucket full of ammunition and a rifle strides, headed toward a modest countryside house. But instead of a welcoming homestead, the house is surrounded by tall chain-link fencing topped with barbed wire, fortified with CCTV cameras and warning signs - a fortress dressed as domesticity.

Banksy interrogates themes of security, surveillance, and militarisation of everyday life. The rifle slung across the girl’s back adds to the tension, suggesting that even innocence is now armed. The contrast between the idyllic rural setting and the hostile security infrastructure critiques the way fear and control are embedded into the fabric of so-called normal life.

  • “People who enjoy waving flags don’t deserve to have one.”

    – Banksy

Created in 2009, Peasant Woman with Rifle portrays a young girl carrying a rifle and a bucket of ammunition, walking toward a countryside house. Yet the home is anything but safe – it is encircled by barbed wire, CCTV, and warning signs, transforming a domestic setting into a militarised compound.

With this stark juxtaposition, Banksy critiques the infiltration of surveillance and fear into everyday life. By arming a child in an otherwise pastoral scene, he highlights how innocence is compromised when security and violence become ordinary fixtures of society.
