Banksy’s Heavy Weaponry (2006) is a striking piece of political satire executed in stencil spray paint on steel. The artwork depicts a solitary elephant,  a symbol of wisdom, memory, and peace, burdened with a missile strapped tightly to its back. The image is both absurd and unsettling, fusing the natural majesty of the elephant with the brutal machinery of war. The cold, industrial steel sheet adds to the sense of dehumanisation, transforming the animal into a vehicle for destruction.

By combining one of the world’s most revered animals with a weapon of mass violence, Heavy Weaponry exposes the contradictions of modern warfare and human impact on the natural world. Is the elephant a victim, a carrier, or a silent accomplice?

  • “A wall is a very big weapon. It’s one of the nastiest things you can hit someone with.”

    – Banksy

Created in 2006, Heavy Weaponry is a stencil spray-paint work on steel. The composition shows an elephant with a missile mounted to its back, a juxtaposition that transforms the animal into an emblem of militarised absurdity. Combining the symbolic weight of the elephant with the iconography of war, the piece critiques both environmental exploitation and the relentless logic of conflict.
