In Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search, Banksy stages an extraordinary dialogue between his own street art legacy and the radical energy of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Painted in 2018, the monumental work depicts two police officers frisking one of Basquiat’s trademark skeletal figures, while a Basquiat-style dog stands at their feet. The composition merges the raw urgency of Basquiat’s visual language with Banksy’s biting social commentary, transforming the stop-and-search into an allegory for the way institutions co-opt, police, and profit from the subversive voices of Black artists.

Executed on birch wood with acrylic and wax marker, the work pushes beyond stencil into painterly territory, while retaining Banksy’s unmistakable use of satire and dark humour. By appropriating Basquiat’s iconic imagery, Banksy underscores his enduring critique of systemic racism, authority, and the commodification of rebellion within the art market. Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search is both homage and protest, bridging generations of politically charged art and reaffirming Banksy’s position as one of the most uncompromising voices in contemporary culture.

  • "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.”

     – Banksy

Banksy’s Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search is a monumental tribute and critique rolled into one. By merging Basquiat’s iconic skeletal figure and dog with a scene of police frisking, Banksy exposes how institutions surveil, control, and ultimately profit from radical Black creativity. The collaboration across time highlights shared themes of resistance, exploitation, and the uneasy relationship between art and authority.
