    Golf Sale, 2003

Golf Sale, 2003 is a print based on the iconic Tiananmen Square Tank Man photo from the 1989 protests. The composition of a line of tanks stopped by a lone man is a clear reference to Jeff Widener's photograph, but Banksy has fused this famed anti-authoritarian image to incorporate an anti-capitalist edge.

The absurdism of a sale sign infront of tanks fits with Banksy's approach of juxtaposition, taking the contrast of the original photo to another level in order to comment of the obsesssion society has with consumerism.

  • "Fight the fighters, not their wars"

    - Banksy

Using a detailed monochromatic design, the message of this work is emphasised further by the simplistic palette allowing the increased impact of it's commentary. By juxtaposing a 'Golf Sale' sign with tanks, Banksy presents a sharp satire of how capitalist priorities can overshadow even the most pressing human rights issues.  Famous for his anti-establishment, anti-capitalist and anti-war sentiments, Banksy fuses all of these themes in this print through the work itself and the socio-political context of the reference image.
