    Girl with Balloon, 2004

Girl with Balloon, 2004 is part of Banksy’s ongoing repositioning of his ‘Girl with Balloon’ design. This stencil first appeared in Shoreditch in 2002 and has continued to be one of his most recognisable iconographies. The stencil has been using as part of the 2004 print release, as well as on canvas and in several of his murals.

The work has appeared at various times, including in 2014 to discuss the war in Syria and notably in 2018 during the ‘shredder incident’ at Sotheby’s. During the bidding closure at one of their evening auctions, a remote was used to trigger a shredder that was built into the frame of the artwork.

    - Banksy

Showing a young child in the wind with a balloon, it’s unclear to the viewer if the wind has blown it out of their hand or if the child has chosen to release it. This ambiguous nature allows the work to take on a variety of meanings based on how the viewer decides to interpret it. With a simple design and eyecatching use of red, the iconic design has continued to be widely recognised and loved by critics, collectors and members of the public.
