The Moonwalk works were one of Warhol’s final explorations of American icons before his untimely death later that year. The bold compositions, overlaid with neon hues add a playful sense of nostalgia, and reflect Warhol's enduring interest in media and moments that represented the cultural zeitgeist of the time. These pieces were inspired by the Apollo 11 mission where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin becoming the first humans to set foot on the Moon in 1969. Using his signature silkscreen technique, Warhol captured the iconic image of Aldrin, adding his hallmark vivid colors and pop art aesthetic.
