In 1972 Richard Nixon travelled to China to meet with chairman Mao Zedong. Shortly after this, with the encouragement by his dealer Bruno Bischofberger, Andy Warhol conceived his now iconic Mao series of silkscreens. The works were created from an official portrait of Mao distributed with his famous Little Red Book throughout China. Along with the silkscreens, Warhol created several unique Mao paintings, which have gone on to become some of the most expensive works of art to sell.
