David Hockney captured the changing seasons of 2020 and into the new year from a quaint farmhouse in Normandy. Using his iPad, he spontaneously depicted the surrounding landscape, showcasing the first spring blossoms, summer scents, vibrant autumn colors, and stark winter branches. The book features 220 iPad paintings (plus four bonus pieces), printed with up to seven special colors to reflect Hockney’s vision, all tipped in on dark blue paper stock.

Accompanying this book is a smaller volume of ink and watercolor drawings, presenting complete facsimiles of two 2019 sketchbooks. These sketchbooks begin near Hockney’s Los Angeles home and trace his scouting trips around Normandy. Both volumes are enclosed in a clamshell box, with the inside lid featuring Hockney’s iPad painting of an aerial view of the Normandy house and garden.

In 2009, David Hockney embraced the iPhone as a new medium for his art, leading to a significant shift in his creative approach. That spring, he began producing digital sketches, capturing morning scenes with vivid hues and bold lines directly on the screen, utilizing the device's ability to convey pure light. A year later, Hockney transitioned to the iPad, which offered a larger canvas and allowed him to further explore the complex relationships between color, light, and form.

This collection brings together 120 digital drawings, handpicked by Hockney himself, created between 2009 and 2012. The images offer a window into fleeting moments from his Yorkshire home, depicting everything from glowing sunrises to serene night-time vistas and the awakening of spring, all reflecting Hockney’s evolving artistic vision.
